One of our most prominent clients, REWE Romania estimates a turnover of nearly 3 billion lei in the calendar year 2018, 5% more than in 2017. For the Penny Market division, the registered increase was 17% much higher than in the previous year.
According to the company’s data, investments in the Romanian retail market will continue this year. The group invested over 482 million lei in 2018 in the modernization and expansion of the network in order to provide the Romanians, thus reaching 241 shops and three logistics centers. Also, the company’s contribution to the state budget of Romania in the previous year was over 136 million lei.
“Year 2018 was very good for us, and the figures speak for themselves about the company’s evolution. Penny Market has a 17% increase in turnover compared to 2017, we have grown steadily and expanded our network in 2018 with 20 stores, and this 20-25 yearly growth plan is still valid. We will invest in Romania and develop our business here so that in 2025 we will reach 400 stores, “said Daniel Gross, General Manager of REWE Romania.
Penny Market also increased its number of employees: In 2018, a total of 4,800 employees were working in the company, up 8% more than in 2017. Currently, the average team age is 33 years.
The retailer has entered the Romanian market since 2005, having a procurement policy focused on assortments from regional producers and collaborations with local producers. Currently, it is among the companies with over 60% of local products, thus contributing to the development of the agri-food sector and the support of the Romanian economy.
So for the current year, Penny Market plans include: expansion investment in line with ISO 50 001 certification, completion of the remodeling of all stores, and expanding collaboration with Romanian producers along with engaging in community support and protection of the environment.
